A crash diet is anything that promises fast results by making your drastically change your diet to something that probably sounds a little bit off the wall. These are very rarely methods of safe weight loss. For instance, some crash diets ask you to drink nothing but a strange liquid concoction for two days. It promises that you will lose up to 10 pounds in just two days.
There are a few problems with these types of diet. First of all, most (if not basically all) of the weight that you lose will be water weight. Your body is full of water – a huge percentage of your body is made up of water. Water is the biggest reason that your weight fluctuates from day to day. Most crash diets are simply ways to rid you of some water weight. Yes, it’s true that the scale will tell you that you weight less – but it won’t be that way for long. Since water weight fluctuates so much, you will likely put it right back on.
The second reason that these diets are harmful is because they may damage your body by keeping good nutrition and replacing it with something strange. If your crash diet involves eating nothing but special snack bars for a week in place of normal meals, you may not be getting much nutrition.
After a few days, your body may start to suffer the consequences of that. You may become tired, lose all energy and in some cases you may become extremely depressed or stricken with migraines.
The third way the crash diets are harmful to you is because they take the emphasis away from diets that really work. You can lose weight the good old fashioned way – a healthy diet and exercise. You don’t need some strange brand of crash diet to tell you how to get rid of extra weight.
If you work out a low calorie and low fat meal plan each week and follow a regimented exercise plan, then you will surely see some results inside of just a few weeks. But, the use of a crash diet makes us think that there are other ways. That leads thousands of people each month trying to find ways to lose weight quickly and not always in the safest ways.
A crash diet may look appealing, but avoid them at all costs. The promise of results is intriguing, but just think about whether it is truly worth the risk.
